Naming a Technique

Over the years I have heard the Open/Close technique called by many different names: the push pull technique, reverse finger control, mini-Moeller technique, the Gladstone technique, drop/squeeze, drop/snap, drop/bounce etc. Personally, I've always preferred Open/Close because I feel it best describes the basic hand motions used to accomplish it. I also believe that by giving a technique a descriptive name like open/close, you communicate more information about what it is and how it's done than you can with a persons last name.

The other reason I prefer a descriptive name is to avoid the common situation I've observed surrounding the Moeller technique. That is, the number of drummers who've heard and repeat the phrase "The Moeller Technique" is far greater than the number of drummers who actually understand what the technique is, and how to do it. With no slight or disrespect intended toward Mr. Moeller, I believe the difference between those two numbers would be far less if the technique bearing his name had a descriptive name instead.
