This book shows how it's possible to produce flam, drag, ruff, and roll sounds all by morphing double strokes with Open/Close Technique. The Open/Close Technique breaks a double stroke down into two separate movements. A downward opening movement plays the first note, and an upward closing movement plays the second. The mechanical separation makes it possible to control the rhythmic timing of the second note, independent of the first. The Open movement must happen first, but the Close movement can be made anytime after that, at will.
Exact rhythmic positions of the Open and Close movements are indicated within a hybrid notation system called Slow Motion Notation. This notation combines Open/Close mechanical notations with simple rhythmic notation to assign a precise location for every note of a rudimental pattern, even grace notes. In essence, Slow Motion Notation exposes the high speed mechanical "DNA" of a pattern. Open/Close Technique let's you practice these mechanics at very slow tempos, dramatically shortening the learning curve of the pattern.
Slow Motion Notation was used to create rhythmic variations of three short sticking patterns containing double strokes. Each rhythmic variation was then used as a foundational building block to which was added singles, and/or more building blocks to create longer patterns. Each extension idea applied to the rhythmic variations of one sticking, created a group or "family" of related patterns all sharing the exact same mechanical "DNA". This construction process not only yields many of the Percussive Arts Society's International Drum Rudiments, it also reveals their mechanical "relatives" as well.
