The Open/Close Technique
The Open/Close Technique is a multi-note stroke technique that coordinates natural hand movement with natural stick movement. The resulting mechanical efficiency allows a drummer to play a fast, continuous stream of notes with one hand using a minimum of physical effort. In the past, this technique has typically only been used in one hand at a time; usually on the ride cymbal for fast continuous 8th note or 16th note patterns. In the video lesson posted here, Gordy Knudtson demonstrates the basic moves of the Open/CLose Tecnique, and shows you how to synchronize and apply it in both hands at the same time.
Gordy's video, released in 2002, generated an invitation from the Percussive Arts Society for Gordy to be one of only three presenters chosen for their first ever "Hand Development Series" clinic series offered at PASIC 2003. The other two clinicians invited to participate this series were Joe Morello and Jim Chapin.
